Every man for himself just won’t make the cut

Whether you like it or not, today’s workplace is all about team players, VIRGINIA GALT reports

VIRGINIA GALT

Concordia University Professor Saul Carliner is well acquainted with “the tyranny of teamwork.”

Indeed, anyone who does not have the good fortune of serving on a dream
team is familiar with the frustrations: time wasted in unnecessary
meetings, dominant group members who suck up all the “air time,” people
who are closed-minded to any idea that originated elsewhere (Prof.
Carliner calls this the “not-invented-here syndrome.”)

Still, Prof. Carliner assigns group work to students in his educational
technology courses — as much as they hate it — because teamwork is the
way of the working world. Best to learn early how to play along and
influence the process to make it work better, he reasons.

If the 1980s was the decade of the “The Individual” — where employees
were encouraged to compete with each other — this is the decade of “The
Team Player,” says Gabriel Bouchard, vice-president and general manager of
the jobsite Monster.ca.

British management consultant and author Kevan Hall adds that, in most
organizations, “if you say you are not a team player, it’s the kiss of
death for your career.”

Sasquatch Books profiled in recent Publishers Weekly

Sasquatch Sightings

The quintessential regional press now has national appeal

by Michael Coffey — Publishers Weekly, 3/5/2007

The name comes from Halkomelem, a Native American language that has no
established relationship to any other. Sasquatch, which means “hairy man,”
was a fitting enough name, once upon a time, for a small Seattle press
that published only regional titles and seldom sold books outside the
Pacific Northwest. But in recent years, though the mythical forest beast
hasn’t been spotted, Sasquatch books are much in evidence far beyond the
home region—thanks to the efforts of a New York–seasoned editor and a
local librarian.

DVD Release of Deepak Chopra’s The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success set for May 8

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/1878424114.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpgOn May 8th Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release a DVD based on Deepak Chopra’s bestselling book THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS. Offering a life-altering perspective on the attainment of success, Chopra, beloved singer Olivia Newton-John, and acclaimed director-actor Bill Duke share powerful personal stories about the challenges they’ve faced, which have nonetheless placed them firmly on the path towards experiencing life’s fullest potential.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s initial release will be 200,000 copies — a significant release for the New Age/Spiritual genre. One only has to look at the phenomena that the DVD release of “The Secret” has created. In just a few short months there are now more than 1.2 million copies of the book THE SECRET in print. Alim Thompson at New Leaf Distributing has called it quite possibly the biggest thing he’s ever seen since he got in the business. While we’re not predicting this sort of success for THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS, we have little doubt that this DVD release is going to help spur sales on both the book and audio CD. To prepare for this anticipated surge in sales, Amber Allen/New World Library just ordered a 35,000-copy reprint of THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS book (we just received a 15,000-copy reprint) and a 10,000-copy reprint of the audio CD. Both of these products have a metallic gold starburst with copy that reads “Now a Twentieth Century Fox Film Available on DVD”, which delicately waltzes around the fact that there is no theatrical release.  We should receive both of these reprints no later than the last week in March.

Two Soft Skull Books Reviewed in the Globe

From this past weekend, small reviews of African Psycho and Mitz in the Globe and Mail:

One of many cavils directed against crime fiction by some critics is that it isn’t “literary.” Fortunately, in most other countries, that’s not an issue. The French have always celebrated the roman policier and, in many cases, discovered new authors like Chester Himes years before they found an English-reading audience.

African Psycho, first published in French in 2003, is the auspicious North American debut from a francophone author who most certainly deserves to be discovered. It is smart, stylish and plenty “literary.” It is also a frightening trip into the mind of a very scary, very dangerous man.

The title, and the book, reference Bret Easton Ellis’s notorious American Psycho. Mabanckou, in Los Angeles but born in Brazzaville, French Congo, is deliberate in his homage. But while Ellis’s protagonist was simply a monster, Mabanckou’s Gregoire is far more nuanced, constantly affirming and defending himself. And in his lies and conflicts, we find ourselves drawn to him even as we are repelled.

The story begins with Gregoire setting out on his quest to become a serial killer, a newspaper star. He takes as his mentor the dead murderer Angoualima, at whose gravesite he sits to tell his plans. The victim is to be his girlfriend, Germaine. But this must be a murder that stands out, not easy in an (unnamed) African country where murder is fairly common and corruption rife.

While we follow Gregoire’s tortured reasoning and careful planning, it’s Mabanckou’s talents (ably translated by Christine Schwartz Hartley) that carry the story. It’s difficult to believe, but this novel is often funny as Gregoire talks to himself and Angoualima’s imagined body.

Be warned, however, African Psycho isn’t an Alexander McCall Smith tale. This is a story about murder, and Mabanckou is unsparing. The French have already called him a young writer to watch. After this debut, I certainly concur.

Mitz: The Marmoset of Bloomsbury by Sigrid Nunez

In 1934, Leonard and Virginia Woolf came into possession of a sickly marmoset named Mitz. The tiny monkey flourished with them for years, much of it on Leonard’s shoulder. Nunez used letters, diaries and memoirs to research this clever novel.
